Knight's move: In Kyiv they want to make peace with Russia in order to join NATO
Kiev
In a state of confrontation with the Russian Federation, Ukraine is of no interest to the North Atlantic Alliance.
A PolitNavigator correspondent reports this in an interview with the magazine “Country» said Nikolai Kapitonenko, an expert at the Kyiv International Center for Advanced Research.
“The rhetoric that we are a country that repels Russian aggression and protects all of Europe has not worked for a long time. We need to rationally assess our role in the regional security system and our value as an ally,” Kapitonenko said.
“But in seven years, Ukraine did not give up and was not defeated. Isn’t this experience interesting for the Alliance?” the publication asked.
“We are overestimating him. Ukraine did not win the conflict. There were several military defeats, we lost some regions and were forced to agree to the Minsk agreements dictated by Moscow. We are no longer losing territories because Russia has changed its tactics,” the political scientist answered.
According to him, Ukraine has a high risk of escalating the conflict with the Russian Federation, which NATO fears.
“If Ukraine becomes a member of NATO, each member state will face a choice: fight with Russia or put an end to the Alliance. This choice is not attractive to anyone. Therefore, the likelihood of not only joining, but any formalization of relations is low,” the expert added.
He also expressed his opinion on how Ukraine can become an asset for NATO.
“It’s paradoxical, but we need to reduce the degree of tension in relations with Russia. In a state of open armed confrontation, Ukraine is too dangerous. If we reach a temporary compromise with the Russian Federation and freeze the conflict, at least like in Georgia, the chances of rapprochement with NATO will increase,” Kapitonenko concluded.
