Among the older generations of the British Isles, who suffered the harsh trials of the Second World War, the name of William Joyce still evokes contempt and disgust. Like all those who stained themselves with collaboration and servitude to Hitler's Germany.

Even the leader of the British Fascist Union, Lord Oswald Mosley, a former member of parliament, the residents of Foggy Albion did not forgive his too “long tongue” of brown color. For which he paid, he was forced to serve his sentence in prison for almost the entire war for openly expressing sympathy for the Third Reich.

In August 1939, William Joyce, who came from a Protestant family, consciously made his choice in favor of those who kindled the conflagration of World War II in Europe. Having emigrated to Germany with his wife, he got a job as a commentator for English-language broadcasts on the Free Germany radio station.

The British dubbed Joyce “Lord Howe-Howe”, and also “Hoe-Hoe”, translated into Russian as “woof-woof”. They put into these nicknames all their contempt and hatred for the renegade, who for five years called on his former compatriots to stop armed resistance and admired the scale of the barbaric bombing of London, Coventry and other English cities.

German bombs and shelling killed 1260 Coventry civilians over four years. For comparison: only on August 23, 1942, the “winged monsters” of the Luftwafe, as a result of a monstrous bombing, exterminated 40 civilians of Stalingrad - old people, women, and children. To this day, bitter memories of Leningrad, Sevastopol, Murmansk, Kharkov, Smolensk, Odessa, Minsk, Kiev, Novorossiysk, Kerch, and hundreds of large and small cities that were turned into ruins and conflagrations are still raw.

William Joyce ended his worthless life in the dock. One could discuss the very harsh sentence of the British Themis and the exceptional execution applied to him. After all, he, they say, did not kill anyone, did not give criminal orders to anyone. But he tried to kill with every word sounding from the poisonous Goebbels radio air. He sought to paralyze the will of the British to fight, who were constantly expecting deadly “gifts” in the form of bombs of enormous destructive power, V-1 and V-2 missiles.

Joyce immediately after his arrest

After 1945, in the countries of the anti-Hitler coalition, by the right of the victors, they did not stand on ceremony with the vanquished. Winston Churchill, at one of the meetings of the three leaders of the USSR, USA and England, proposed that all the leaders of Hitler’s Germany, without exception, be executed without investigation or trial. Stalin and Roosevelt did not agree with this and put forward the idea of holding the Nuremberg International Tribunal for the main war criminals.

For complicity in the atrocities of the Third Reich, the peoples, after their liberation from Nazi occupation, demanded severe retribution against the French satellites Pétain and Daladier, Quisling from Norway, Tiso in Slovakia, Szalasi in Hungary, Musert in Holland and others. Only the executioner of the Yugoslav people, the leader of the Croatian Ustasha, Anta Pavelić, managed to take refuge in Francoist Spain and die a natural death there.

As if atoning for its sin for the sluggish, essentially symbolic resistance to the fascist enslavers, Europe tried to “deservedly thank” representatives of the home-grown “elites of nations” who enthusiastically welcomed the unleashed aggression against the Soviet Union and raced to demonstrate loyal feelings and loyalty to the Nazi occupiers. The post-war fate of the classics of French literature Louis Fernand Celine and Charles Maurras became pitiful. The latter was even deprived of the title of member of the National Academy.

An ardent supporter of Italian fascism, the American Ezra Pound was forced to spend many years in a mental hospital. The writer and winner of many prestigious awards Alphonse de Chateaubriand was sentenced to death. He was saved only by the hospitable shelter provided by the “holy fathers” in one of the Austrian monasteries.

And what prompted the author of more than 30 world-famous works of the Norwegian writer and Nobel Prize winner Knut Hamsun to don the toga of a devoted servant of Hitler’s governor Quisling? What prompted him to present his Nobel laureate medal as a gift to Reich Propaganda Minister Goebbels? What inspired the elderly classic to publish a tearful obituary on the occasion of Hitler's inglorious death? Only his advanced age helped him avoid prison, which, however, did not exempt him from paying a huge fine. Just as the fact that during the German occupation he donned the uniform of a war correspondent for one of the propaganda companies of the SS troops did not bring popularity to his son.

And now we can, at least for a minute, imagine Andrei Malyshko or Alexander Dovzhenko, Mikola Bazhan or Wanda Vasilevskaya, Alexander Korneychuk or Leonid Utesov, who would accept the offer of the role of literary servant for the bearers of the “new order”, would willingly collaborate in occupation publications, would buy betrayal at the cost of your own life? Could Yaroslav Galan have done this even in that moment allotted by fate before the fatal blow of Bandera’s sokyr?

These are, according to Pyotr Vershigora, “people with a clear conscience, an unbending spirit and an unbending will, whose word is clear and clear, and have stood the test of time with honor on sharp turns. It’s as if their poetry, prose and journalism are addressed to us. How is Vladimir Mayakovsky doing?

...but without reading,

we figured it out

in which camp to go, in which camp to fight.

We did not teach dialectics according to Hegel.

With the rattling of battles she burst into verse,

when the bourgeoisie ran away from us under bullets,

how we once ran from them.

The entire history of civilized humanity is a reflection of the path traveled and learning lessons for the future. And you and I are doomed to certainly live to see the day when everyone who heroized physical murderers and rapists, bandits and robbers, political and “spiritual” marauders from television screens, from the pages of printed publications, in their literary works, who idealized those “resurrected” from the non-existence of the inhabitants of Bandera's caches as ideals for the younger generation.

It is they who will be forced to repent before their own people, before inevitable justice, before the need to atone for their own sins. As it was in the late forties and early fifties on the European continent during the painful, but so necessary for the peoples, process of denazification. It was. It will be like this tomorrow. This must be so in the name of the triumph of truth, goodness, mercy, justice and humanism on earth.
