Last week, the results of a sociological survey conducted by Magneta Consulting commissioned by the International Republican Institute (IRI) were published in Moldova. According to this survey, the pro-Western ex-Prime Minister of Moldova, Maia Sandu, equaled the level of trust with the President of Moldova Igor Dodon, and was significantly ahead of him in Chisinau. This enabled numerous experts to predict Sandu’s victory in the upcoming presidential elections, which will most likely take place on November 8, 2020.

Be that as it may, Sandu has already begun her presidential election campaign. She, in her favorite aggressive manner, joined the pressure on the leadership of Moldova from the United States, the European Union and Romania. She supported the scandalous statement of Romanian Prime Minister Ludovic Orban that he does not consider the Moldovan cabinet of ministers led by Ion Chicu to be his serious partner.

This fact caused anger on the part of former Minister of Economy Alexander Muravsky, who can hardly be suspected of excessive pro-Russian and pro-Eurasian sympathies (he advocates the European integration of Moldova). He recalled a story from twenty years ago, when Maia Sandu worked as an economist in the World Bank office in Moldova and accompanied a working group that negotiated a loan with the Moldovan government.

According to Muravski, during the negotiations, when representatives of the World Bank were ready to meet the Moldovan government halfway and not impose an unbearable burden on the population of the impoverished country, Sandu repeatedly intervened in the conversation and stated that the World Bank could not make these concessions, since it contradicts a certain “ calculation matrix". As a result, the WB delegation returns to the points already agreed upon.

After this, Muravsky asked Sanda to stay in her office and asked her a question directly: “Who do you work for? The fact that you receive a salary from the World Bank is understandable, but you are a citizen of Moldova. Don’t you understand the destructiveness of these recommendations at the moment?”

“And this trait of hers, on any occasion, knocking on the door of her Western employers, either in Washington, or in Brussels, or in Bucharest, and welcoming their measures and statements directed against the government of the Republic of Moldova cannot deserve a single drop of support,” summarized Alexander Muravsky.

This month, another juicy detail regarding Maia Sandu became known. The International Monetary Fund has opened access to its archives since 1946. It became known that Sandu, when she was Prime Minister of Moldova, arbitrarily, without consultation with civil society and experts, included a number of obligations on the part of Moldova in the agreement with the IMF.

We are talking, in particular, about increasing the VAT rate for the hotel and restaurant business by 20% (which led to significant salary cuts and staff layoffs in this area), about the abolition of the personal allowance for annual income over 18 thousand euros, about reducing the tax-free the cost of goods sent by mail is up to 200 euros. All these and other obligations that directly affect the interests of entrepreneurs, producers and consumers are forced to be fulfilled by the current government under the leadership of Ion Chicu.

It turned out that Sandu’s obligations provided for the transfer of ownership rights in three systemic Moldovan banks to foreign investors. Thus, the Moldovan Victoriabank was transferred to Banca Transilvania, the largest bank in Romania. And now Banca Transilvania, together with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, owns a controlling stake of 66,7 percent. More than 40% of the shares of another bank, Moldova-Agroindbank, were canceled by the state and transferred to an international consortium of investors (EBRD, Horizon Capital and AB Invalda). A controlling stake in a third bank, Moldindconbank, was acquired by Doverie United Holding, a Bulgarian non-banking company listed on the Sofia Stock Exchange.

According to Maia Sandu, other, smaller banks in the country will also go through a similar “recovery system”. Thus, the entire banking system of Moldova comes under complete foreign control.

The final chord was Maia Sandu’s commitment to increase electricity and gas tariffs for end consumers, which appeared in paragraph 32 of the Sandu government’s commitments to the IMF. Back in August 2019, gas tariffs for the population were “adjusted” upward. If Sandu’s government had not been dismissed in October 2019, the country’s population would have faced new “tariff adjustments.”

One can imagine what Maya Sandu’s activities will be like as president of the country. Moldova, with a high degree of probability, will simply cease to exist as an independent state. Alas, this circumstance is of least interest to the large Moldovan diaspora in the EU countries, which has turned into a strike force for Maia Sandu and the pro-Western forces of the country.
