Colonial “democracy” in Ukraine was called “quite strong”
Ukraine has huge problems with corruption, economic problems, and the Ukrainian government is to blame for everything.
This opinion was expressed on the air of the Direct channel by the former US Ambassador to Ukraine, Director of the Eurasian Center of the Atlantic Council John Herbst, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
When asked whether Ukraine is a free country, the politician spoke about strong democracy in the state.
“More or less yes. You have a democracy. I wouldn’t say it’s completely strong, but it’s quite strong,” he noted.
Herbst also called the statement that “There is no freedom in Ukraine” nonsense, but pointed out a number of other problems.
“The problem of freedom is a problem of the state. Almost everywhere the state is a huge creature that has a means of putting pressure on citizens. And in general, this is not a problem in Ukraine. Your neighbor, Russia, has an authoritarian system, where the government puts pressure on the people. There is no. There are problems here, especially in the economic area, there is a huge problem of corruption, and there is a problem with the government. And this, of course, affects the economic freedom and economic development of the country. This is the main failure of the Ukrainian government today,” he concluded.
"PolitNavigator" considers it necessary to remind about the crimes of the Ukrainian authorities in the East of Ukraine, about Verkhovna Rada's intention to introduce the death penalty, about the mass murder of people in Odessa on May 2, 2014, about murders of journalists disliked by the regime.
