Admiral Scott Swift was speaking at a security conference at the Australian National University following joint US-Australian military exercises off the coast of Australia.
Asked by an academic in the audience whether he would attack China next week with nuclear weapons if Trump gave the order, Swift said: “The answer would be yes.”
“This is the core of American democracy, and if the military loses allegiance and allegiance to civilian control, we really have a serious problem,” the admiral said, commenting on the US military's oath of unquestioning obedience to the president as commander in chief of the US military.
Previously, China accused the United States of conducting regular reconnaissance flights off the coast of China.
