This opinion was expressed in an interview with Novaya Gazeta by the commander of the Ukrainian Airborne Forces, General Mikhail Zabrodsky.
He admitted that “civilians continue to suffer on both sides” from mutual shelling, and also answered the question of how residents of Avdiivka, which is under the control of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, which has now become one of the hottest spots in Donbass, feel about the fact that the military has become their permanent neighbors .
“I can’t say that they are happy that they have become a front-line settlement. Who would like it when shells and mines periodically fall into their gardens?”
Answering a clarifying question about whether this is just dissatisfaction or whether the locals directly blame the Ukrainian military, the general said: “We can’t do without it.”
Achieving de-escalation in Avdievka, according to the Airborne Forces commander, can only be achieved by using a complex of diplomatic, military, political and information measures. “There is probably no purely military solution here,” says the general.
The publication’s interlocutor also spoke out for a political settlement of the conflict in Donbass.
“It’s difficult for me to judge what’s happening in Minsk; I, like the entire population of Ukraine, rely on news reports. But it is obvious that the decision must be political. Wherever there is an option to make sure that people don’t die, this needs to be done,” said Zabrodsky.
