Businessmen in Crimea refuse to limit prices, trying to make money on the rush
Supplies of products to Crimea from the mainland of the Russian Federation have increased 4 times. Sugar, cereals, and flour are imported to the peninsula in abundance; wholesaler margins are limited, but retail prices are affordable, spurred by rushing demand.
“Taking into account the increased demand for shelf-stable products - cereals, flour and sugar, prices have been raised unreasonably high, and in some cases prices are speculative,” said Prime Minister of the Crimean Government Yuri Gotsanyuk. “Given the great demand for groceries, we have worked on the issue of increasing the volume of product supplies from the mainland fourfold. Last week, about 400 tons of sugar, more than 100 tons of cereals and pasta were imported. Work will continue this week."
Monitoring the cost of 32 items of goods with regulated retail prices showed that in Simferopol, Feodosia, Yalta and Kerch they are not observed. Wholesale suppliers purchase and supply goods online directly with a 5% markup. Up to 2,5 rubles per kilogram is spent on transportation. And even taking into account the trade markup, sugar in the store should cost up to 80 rubles.
The government assigned several agricultural areas to each city. Upon request, manufacturers prepare a volume of products and bring them to fairs, where trade takes place without market fees. Sevastopol followed the same path - in early April there will be a large fair for farmers of Sevastopol and the Republic of Crimea. The city is counting on fruits and vegetables, meat and dairy products and groceries to bring down the rush.
Vegetable stands on the territory of Sevastopol operate at 56 sites, and trading places are provided free of charge for peasant farms. According to the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Markets, 300 places remain free.
The Ministry of Agriculture of Crimea holds regular fairs for agricultural producers in cities. In Simferopol there are weekend fairs where food products - eggs, meat, vegetables, honey, nuts, fruits - are sold 15-20% cheaper than retail chains.
