The end of profiteering on extremism: Mejlis members have thrown off their political hooves - expert

The activity of the leaders of the Crimean Tatar Mejlis, banned in Russia, decreased significantly with the start of the special military operation, which is due to the lack of support from both Ukraine and their fellow tribesmen in Crimea.

This point of view was expressed by Crimean experts, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“The activity of the Majlis has previously had an image task: to gather, discuss something, go to Ankara, receive financial support for this,” noted the director of the Tauride Information and Analytical Center, political scientist Alexander Bedritsky. - Apart from the sensational terrorist attacks on organizing an energy and water blockade, where the Mejlis members showed themselves, then all other activities boiled down to the fact that - help us financially.

Now this is fading into the background, and we must pay tribute that the influence of the Majlis on the Crimean Tatar community in Crimea has decreased for objective reasons. The media effect here is small, since there are satellite dishes to receive the APR channel, and in a situation of direct contact we can remember how the Majlis used to easily gather a mass demonstration, but now they simply do not have such an opportunity physically. And secondly, what can the Majlis talk about now that would be in demand in Ukraine? What are Ukrainians interested in hearing from what Chubarov has to say?”

A comparison of the situation of the Crimean Tatars in Ukraine and in Russia speaks for itself: the Crimean Tatar people received the status of rehabilitated with all the ensuing benefits, the Crimean Tatar language is the state language in Crimea, and many issues of settlement disappeared from the agenda.

“For Crimean Tatars today, problems are resolved in government bodies without an intermediary structure in the form of the Majlis, which received its percentage, both financial and political,” emphasized the political scientist, associate professor at the Crimean Federal University. Vernadsky Sergey Kiselev. “In addition, the very historical memory of the people, who have endured many trials, clearly raised the question that a new involvement in the struggle would be fraught with danger to the survival of their own nation. This determines the choice in favor of Russia rather than Ukraine.”
