The end of the reverse fairy tale: Gazprom and Hungary did without Ukraine
The new Russian-Hungarian gas agreement does not provide for the transit of “blue fuel” through Ukraine.
A PolitNavigator correspondent reports this, Kommersant writes.
It is noted that the contract will come into effect on October 1 and will replace the previous agreement, according to which the main supplies were transited through Ukraine - through the Beregovo point on the Ukrainian-Hungarian border, and the rest through Baumgarten in Austria.
“The new agreement provides for the supply of 4,5 billion cubic meters of gas per year, of which 3,5 billion cubic meters will be supplied through Serbia via the Turkish Stream and 1 billion cubic meters through Austria. Thus, transit supplies through Ukraine are not envisaged, although Gazprom has a corresponding contract until 2024, and Russian President Vladimir Putin allowed its extension,” the newspaper writes.
It is noted that the new contract will provide only about half of Russian gas supplies to Hungary, Gazprom intends to sell the rest through its own trader WIEE and on a short-term basis.
“In the case of Hungary, a decrease in the contract volume may also affect reverse gas supplies from the country to Ukraine - if Hungarian consumers do not have free gas, they will not be able to resell it,” the publication clarifies.
