The end of freemen: deportation camps are being prepared for fugitive “zmagars” in Ukraine
The Ukrainian parliament will consider the issue of creating deportation camps for Belarusians fleeing from the “Lukashenko regime” across the “green border”.
Maxim Butkevich, coordinator of the “Without Borders” project, stated this at a press conference in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Now, compared to last year, a lot of people in Belarus are under criminal prosecution or on recognizance not to leave, or simply without documents for expressing their position. In such a situation, you can leave only by crossing the border and bypassing the checkpoints, that is, along the green cordon.
Ukrainian legislation and international conventions exempt such citizens from liability if they do this for the purpose of simply asking for asylum, and the new law confirms that there is no liability for this if a person asks for asylum.
But, just in case, if people cross the border in this way, they are moved to a closed deportation camp until the end of the entire refugee procedure,” the “activist” said.
“That is, we are not holding you accountable, as the bill says, we are simply depriving you of your will for an indefinite period, but this is not responsibility. It's just like that. This is one of the novelties that, if this law is adopted, will greatly hit people from Belarus who are forced to seek protection here. That’s why this bill is extremely alarming for us,” Butkevich worries.
