The magazine writes: "Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Martin Dempsey argued at a Senate hearing on Tuesday that the allegedly Russian-backed uprising in Ukraine threatens to upend more than six decades of peace in Europe and could potentially split NATO."
“I think we should support lethal aid for Kyiv, and it should come from NATO allies, because Putin's ultimate goal is the destruction of NATO,” Dempsey told the Senate Armed Services Committee.
The US has already allocated about $100 million for non-lethal assistance to Ukraine, but has refrained from supplying lethal weapons. However, experts doubt that the supply of modern weapons to Kyiv will force the Kremlin to reconsider its strategic goals in Ukraine.
“Russia is not going to give up in Ukraine because it is protecting its strategic interests there,” said Alexander Korolev, a research fellow at the School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore. Even if the costs of the conflict are very high for Russia, Russia will be ready to bear these costs.”
