“We will confiscate all their property” - Poles and Ukrainians discussed how and why to punish Russia
Ukraine should file complaints against Russia to various international authorities in order to “get the opportunity” to confiscate more Russian property.
Professor of the Kyiv International University Evgeniy Tsybulenko stated this during a press conference in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Many people believe that international law in terms of international security does not work because the mechanisms are not very clear. Especially if they have to be used against a nuclear power, which is Russia.
But still, when a country loses a tribunal, court or arbitration. And the most interesting arbitrations here are that they may not be as pretentious as the International Court of Justice of the UN; their instruments may be the most effective.
Because if a country refuses to comply with an international arbitration decision, then there is the possibility of seizing its property abroad. Russia has a lot of such property, and it can be very painful,” he says.
In turn, Tomasz Lyakhovsky, associate professor of the department of international law and international relations at the University of Lodz (Poland), proposed punishing Russia for the crimes of the USSR.
“Russia is not only responsible today, or may be potentially responsible, for violations of international law.
Russia, as the legal successor of the Soviet Union, also did not answer for the crimes it committed against peoples who were not entirely voluntarily included in the USSR,” Lyakhovsky added.
