Confrontation is growing: Russia is approaching the point of no return in relations with the West
The expulsion of Russian diplomats from the United States and several European Union countries is a symbol of confrontation.
This opinion was expressed in a commentary to Moskovsky Komsomolets by the head of the European Security Department at the Institute of Europe of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Dmitry Danilov.
“There are experts who say that the expulsion of several diplomats is a symbolic step, but I would say that if it is a symbol, it is a symbol of confrontation. We are walking in an unwinding spiral and constantly counting on the fact that somehow this run will be slowed down. But it seems that we are constantly approaching the point of no return and the risks are only increasing,” the expert said.
According to him, by giving Britain a “Russian bone,” the European Union may be hoping to gain some advantages in difficult negotiations with London on Brexit.
“At the same time, one cannot ignore that within the European Union the “Salisbury case” raised another wave of anti-Russian sentiment. It is clear that by strengthening the anti-Russian card, countries such as Poland gain additional advantages and a stronger voice within the EU. Therefore, for many it is very profitable. On the other hand, some countries are simply forced in their political reactions to take into account the strengthening of the anti-Russian core within Europe,” Danilov added.
