Konstantin Simonov: Lukashenko will not be able to block gas transit to the EU
Despite yesterday’s threat from Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko to cut off gas supplies to Europe, Minsk does not have such an opportunity.
The director of the National Energy Security Fund, Konstantin Simonov, told Komsomolskaya Pravda, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports this.
“All gas pipelines on the territory of Belarus are the property of Gazprom. They are managed by a Russian company. Even if the Prime Minister of Belarus writes a paper demanding to stop transit through Belarus, the question arises: “On what basis will this be done?” the expert said.
He emphasized that today Russia, on the contrary, is increasing gas supplies to Europe.
“We don’t need to block transit. The Ukrainian pipeline and other systems are operating at full capacity. In this regard, we are not supporters of escalation, so I think that we are talking about emotional statements; they will not be implemented in practice,” Simonov believes.
