The Constitutional Court confirmed that it will examine the legality of the scandalous law on language
The Constitutional Court of Ukraine received an appeal from 51 deputies of Ukraine regarding the inconsistency of the language law with the country's Constitution, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
This is stated in a message published on Friday on the court’s website.
“The subject of the right to a constitutional appeal believes that the provisions of a number of articles of Law No. 2704-VIII violate the rights of citizens to use their native language, restrict citizens’ access, for example, to cultural products in their native language, and create an atmosphere of intolerance,” the deputies’ appeal says.
According to the deputies who applied, the law does not comply with the Constitution of Ukraine, since it limits the use of the languages of national minorities living in the country. In particular, the appeal states that “the most numerous of them are Russians, Jews, Belarusians, Moldovans, Bulgarians, Poles” and other nationalities. Among the deputies who signed the document are Alexander Vilkul, Mikhail Dobkin, Vadim Novinsky, Evgeny Muraev and others.
Let us remind you that the Verkhovna Rada adopted the scandalous law on the Ukrainian language on April 25, and on May 15 it was signed by Petro Poroshenko, who was the president of Ukraine at that time. The document stipulates that citizens of the country will be required to use the Ukrainian language in all spheres of life. “Language inspectors” will monitor the implementation of the law. They will be able to attend meetings in any government agencies, demand documents from public organizations and political parties, and also set fines. The adopted law immediately caused a lot of criticism both within Ukraine and abroad, in particular in the EU.
