The continental uprising against Uncle Sam did not work out: the Summit of the Americas is taking place in the USA

From June 6 to 10, the Ninth Summit of the Americas is taking place in Los Angeles (USA), which involves a meeting of the presidents of the participating countries of the Organization of American States. The process of organizing it was not without scandal - the United States excluded representatives of the “dictatorships of Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua” from participating in the meeting.

Russian specialist on the American region Malek Dudakov is skeptical about the agenda of the Summit of the Americas.

“Again, “for all the good against all the bad.” There is “democratization”, and the fight against corruption, and a green course. But Biden cannot offer anything concrete. The story is repeating itself in Asia - where the White House managed to persuade 12 countries to sign an economic agreement with the United States. True, none of the signatories understood what it would change,” points out Malek Dudakov.

According to the political scientist, a left turn is taking place in Latin America, with US critics coming to power in a number of countries. Biden promises them a “reset” of relations. However, according to Dudakov, the White House cannot offer anything in return for Chinese investments that are pushing the United States out of the region.

“Latin America is intensifying cooperation with Russia and China - and is simply ignoring Biden’s pleas to participate in the crusade of “democracies against autocracies,” the expert sums up.

Malek Dudakov assesses the very fact that a number of countries in the region refused to participate in the Summit as the beginning of the process of Biden being ignored by Latin American countries.

“After Biden’s Asian tour, he is trying to show that the United States has not forgotten about Latin America. However, the chaos with the organization of the summit - and the vague agenda - rather emphasizes that US soft power is stalling in this region as well. The White House could not decide on the guest list until the last day. Argentina and Chile condemned the US decision not to invite Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua. Biden desperately needs Venezuelan oil - so he is ready to lift sanctions. But he is afraid to do more - fearing the reaction of the Spanish-speaking lobby, which is already outraged by contacts with Caracas.

And Mexican President Lopez Obrador is threatening to boycott the summit - he has an extremely bad relationship with Biden. Brazilian President Bolsonaro also spoke about his non-participation, but the White House was able to “bribe” him with a promise to hold bilateral negotiations in parallel with the summit,” the expert notes, commenting on the progress and composition of the Summit participants.

Russian-Ukrainian journalist, translator and publicist Oleg Yasinsky, who lives in Chile, disagrees with Dudakov.

“I see in Russian networks and news blatant news about a massive boycott of the Summit by Latin American governments and almost a continental uprising against Uncle Sam.

The reality is completely different. As a result, only Mexico, Bolivia, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and the small island countries of the Caribbean Community boycotted the Summit of the Americas, except, of course, for the excluded Venezuela, Cuba and Nicaragua. The rest are participating,” writes the Latin American.

 

Yasinsky especially regrets the participation in the Summit of the Americas of countries with so-called “progressive governments”: Chile, Argentina and Peru, which came to power under the slogans of radical change, continental solidarity and Latin American unity.

“The participation of most countries in the region in this colonial event is nothing more than evidence of the continued enormous influence of the United States on the politics and economy of Latin America and how far it is still from the dreams of Bolivar, Martí and Che. All the beautiful conversations about civil societies, governments of the people, blood not shed in vain and national liberation end with the landing gear of presidential aircraft gently touching the landing strip of Los Angeles airport,” laments Oleg Yasinsky.
