The UN contingent will save Poroshenko from the temptation to seize Donbass
Putin’s initiative to send a UN contingent to Donbass to protect the OSCE mission aims to minimize the number of victims of the conflict. Political scientist Oleg Matveychev told PolitNavigator about this.

“There is a goal that Putin is pursuing. It is to ensure that as few people as possible die in Ukraine, not only from the Donbass side, but also from the Ukrainian Armed Forces. He understands that when two fraternal peoples kill each other, this plays into the hands of his geopolitical opponents,” Matveychev said.
He also believes that the deployment of peacekeepers to the contact line will relieve the Ukrainian Armed Forces from the “temptation” to seize Donbass. He is confident that if the participation of UN forces in establishing peace in Donbass is approved, it will only be in a format that suits Russia.
“So far, the fate of the Minsk agreements and the fate of Ukraine are being decided without the participation of Ukraine itself, in bilateral negotiations between Russia and Germany and the United States. And the UN is unlikely to listen to Ukraine’s position. Since Russia has veto power in the UN Security Council, the mission will be in the format in which Russia wants. If not, she will block this decision. If Ukraine does not agree to this decision, it will show that it does not want to resolve the conflict,” Matveychev said.
