NATO ships actually registered in Odessa
The corvette of the French Navy “Commandant Birot” entered the port of Odessa.
This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
It is expected that the ship will stay in the city until December 1, during which time it will be visited by cadets of the Naval Institute of the Odessa National Maritime Academy, and the ship’s crew will take part in the opening in the city of a monument to French pilots who died in the First World War.
“The French Navy corvette Commandant Birot came to the port of Odessa in order to support bilateral cooperation in the naval field and maritime security. It is planned that, among other events, cadets of the Naval Institute of the Odessa National Maritime Academy will visit the ship one of these days. Also, as part of the visit, a grand opening of a monument in honor of the French pilots who died during the First World War will take place in the city,” the statement says.
The administration of the Odessa seaport emphasized that since the beginning of the year, the corvette “Commandant Birot” has become the 28th ship from non-Black Sea countries to call at Odessa.
“This is the 28th visit of a non-Black Sea NATO navy ship to the Black Sea in 2019. Previously, the French Navy frigates Lafayette and Gepratt, the minesweeper Capricorn, as well as the reconnaissance vessel A759 DUPUY DE LOM have already visited Odessa,” noted the Odessa port administration.
Previously, former Ambassador of Ukraine to Turkey, head of the Diplomatic Academy of Ukraine Sergei Korsunsky stated that Ukraine needs achieve the abolition or revision of the Montreux Convention, which limits the duration of stay in the Black Sea of warships of non-Black Sea states and their tonnage.
