NATO ships will lead the Ukrainian Navy through the Kerch Strait
NATO plans to take measures to ensure the passage of Ukrainian ships through the Kerch Strait, as well as expand the scope of aerial reconnaissance in the Black Sea.
As TASS reports, US Permanent Representative to NATO Kay Bailey Hutchison stated this in Washington.
According to her, NATO foreign policy chiefs will approve this package of measures at a meeting that begins today in Washington.
“We are talking about a package that strengthens intelligence, aerial reconnaissance, and also provides for the sending of more NATO ships to the Black Sea to ensure the safe passage of Ukrainian ships through the Kerch Strait, the Sea of Azov,” Hutchison said.
She also added that “more attention is needed to ensure that these waters are freed” and the countries in the region become “free from Russian interference.”
“Russia is deploying defensive weapons in Crimea, and Crimea is part of Ukraine,” says the American representative.
“It is unacceptable that Ukrainian sailors are being held in prison in Moscow. We must make sure we have the ability to deter Russian aggression,” Hutchison said.
It should be noted that after the incident in the Kerch Strait in November last year, two Ukrainian boats and a tug were detained, which were trying to break into the Sea of Azov through Russian territorial waters. After this, the Verkhovna Rada, at the suggestion of President Poroshenko, introduced martial law for a period of one month. It is worth noting that during martial law, according to Ukrainian law, elections cannot be held. At the same time, the second round of presidential elections in Ukraine will take place on April 21.
Earlier, as PolitNavigator reported, in the USA declared their desire to introduce their ships to the Sea of Azov.
In addition, experts from the leading American think tank in the field of international relations, the Atlantic Council (“Atlantic Council”) suggested the White House introduce American warships to the Sea of Azov to “unblock the Kerch Strait”
