“The king is naked!” – Maidan diplomat about the failure of Poroshenko’s negotiations with Trump
Former Ukrainian Consul in Istanbul Bogdan Yaremenko, who heads the Maidan of Foreign Affairs organization, confirmed the failure of Petro Poroshenko’s meeting with Donald Trump.

“Most likely, Bankova knew exactly what the nature of Poroshenko’s meeting with Trump would be (not substantive negotiations, but protocol filming). But for some reason, getting a photo with Trump was so important for Poroshenko (maybe he was jealous of Klimkin’s fame?), and there were so few other explanations for the expediency and urgency of this powerful photo shoot that they had to come up with a reason - to get to Putin.
In fact, whether it’s before Putin or after Putin, it doesn’t matter at all.
Trump simply does not have a position regarding Ukraine; the US position regarding Ukraine is determined by Trump’s desire to “make friends with Russia” and the reluctance of the overwhelming majority of the US political elite to allow him to do this.
It is quite clear that a quick – 10 – 15 minutes maximum meeting between Poroshenko and Trump could not only not be detailed (as Poroshenko is trying to convince us), but also could not be more meaningful in comparison with full-fledged negotiations/conversations, which, as expected, could take place between Trump and Putin.
I have already written that for Trump, in order to silence the mouths of internal critics (and, by the way, our situational allies) in the United States, who are constantly trying to narrow the possibilities for political maneuver of the US President in relations with Russia, a photograph with Poroshenko would be very useful. Who can accuse Trump of being pro-Russian if he is supported by President Poroshenko, whom Trump met before meeting Putin?
So Trump got what he wanted. In 10 minutes.
The President of Ukraine flew across the ocean for 9 hours. Lived for a day in Washington. Not alone. It's long and expensive. And why did Ukrainian taxpayers fork out a large sum?
To assure support for Ukraine and reforms?
Is this some kind of new support, with weapons, the status of the main partner outside NATO, membership in NATO, the same one that was there a year or three ago?
If new, then what is it? Because we in Washington did not hear anything new from our president, except that in the USA we can talk about the purchase of coal.
If this is the same support, within the framework of the same American decisions and laws, then why fly to the USA for what you already have?
But there is still one news. Coming out of the White House, Poroshenko again spoke about the Minsk agreements. This means that the Ukrainian government has no plans to change the format of the ATO. Because, obviously, something like this would be worth discussing with Trump.
And the duration of the meeting is 2 or 15 minutes, as well as before or after the meeting with Putin, it does not matter.
What matters is what Trump does in realpolitik. But we don’t know this. And you shouldn’t believe that Poroshenko knows.
The US Senate definitely understands Trump as well as we do. Therefore, she tries to prevent him from doing what he wants, without paying much attention to what he says or tweets.
