Coronavirus is finishing off the EU – Serbia has nowhere to join
Serbia may abandon its desire to join the European Union after the end of the coronavirus epidemic, because it will simply cease to exist.
Political scientist Oleg Bondarenko told PolitNavigator about this.
“As a result of the hysteria associated with the coronavirus pandemic, we will see a completely different new world. A world in which the old borders will return. And it seems that the European Union will become the first political victim of the coronavirus. Therefore, before answering the question about Serbia’s relations with the EU, it is worth asking whether the EU with its open borders and single economy will survive,” Bondarenko noted.
In his opinion, signs of the collapse of the European Union are already evident.
“There is no longer a united Europe, and European countries are concerned only with their own survival. They do not intend to help not only Serbia. They don't intend to help each other. Germany's only concern is that the euro may collapse because of what is happening in Italy. Europe has never considered Serbia part of it. No one will think about how to help Serbia cope with the cornavirus or even supply medical supplies there for money. This applies not only to Serbia, but to the whole of Europe,” Bondarenko concluded.
The expert believes that after the end of the crisis, the countries’ relations with Russia and China will be dictated not by some pan-European values, but by practical interests developing on a bilateral basis.
Meanwhile, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic called European solidarity a “fairytale” and thanked China for its help in the fight against coronavirus.
