Coronavirus will bury the “visa-free” policy for Ukraine: the EU and NATO will become irrelevant
Due to the threat of coronavirus, the European Union has closed the visa-free regime for Ukrainian citizens. However, the temporary measure may become permanent even after the end of the pandemic. A stream of returning migrant workers will pour into Russia.
Ex-Verkhovna Rada deputy and former press secretary of ex-President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych Anna German stated this on the NewsOne TV channel, PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Now the authorities must create a think tank in Ukraine that would develop a development strategy for Ukraine for the period after the end of the epidemic. What will happen next, where will Ukraine go? What will we do with those migrant workers who returned, and whether they will return, because it is not known when the borders will be opened for them. And I’m almost sure that the visa-free regime will be abolished. I think that the conditions for people who want to work will change a lot.
Will it happen that at the same time Russia will open its borders, and a significant part of the migrant workers who worked in the West will go to work in Russia? How then should we deal with those people? We need to protect them, but we have essentially broken off all relations with Russia. We even tore up the Great Treaty, risking the fact that when we had an agreement, we had our borders guaranteed, we tore it up and did it on our own initiative. If migrant workers go to Russia, how will we protect them there? This is a big question,” said the ex-deputy.
“To what extent will the strategy for joining the European Union and NATO be correct after this epidemic? Will it be necessary to change the Constitution and return to a neutral status? We need to think about all this, and not only think, but develop a plan for Ukraine, a vision for Ukraine,” German added.
