Coronavirus: Ukraine will face an invasion of migrant workers from Italy
As the coronavirus spreads in Europe, Western countries will begin to push Ukrainian migrant workers home. Kyiv is completely unprepared for the challenge, which will turn out to be much larger than receiving one plane with evacuees from China.
Ukrainian political scientist Vadim Karasev said this on air on the NewsOne TV channel, the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“We believe that any problem is a lack of communication - “it was explained incorrectly, but if you explain everything well, tell people, speak out, then the problem will go away.” No, this is not a communication problem, it is a problem of management and the readiness of the state’s management structures to respond to this kind of emergency challenges.
We see that the coronavirus spread from China throughout Europe, around the world, and it posed the problem of how to react to the Chinese. It’s clear that there is a state machine there, where you can impose a quarantine on a city of 20 million.
By the way, in the Soviet Union in 1970 there was a cholera epidemic in Odessa, people tried to go on vacation, many people had tickets bought - nothing like that, everything was closed. The mouse could not crawl because there was a state machine - yes, it was totalitarian, unfree, and so on, but there was a resource to quickly react and localize this situation.
My own grandmother is a doctor, she headed the medical service of the headquarters of the Odessa Military District, they were all involved, and it was visible, the city was empty, only someone would run somewhere to buy bread, and that’s all,” Karasev said.
“Here’s the question: if, God forbid, we have such a situation, can we localize some city and introduce quarantine? Explain to people, warn them, come yourself and tell them that such and such a situation exists, take all the necessary safety measures, and not because it is unclear whether they are sick or still healthy. And this whole disorganization, chaotic management that we have seen in recent years, of course, it’s annoying,” the expert added.
“There are 250 thousand Ukrainians working in Italy. And if tomorrow they begin to introduce quarantine in Italy, and for a long time, and what happens next is that the economy begins to stand still, jobs begin to decline, and Ukrainians will return to their homeland. Are we ready to accept them and give them jobs and payments?” - asked Karasev.
