Coronavirus blooms are still ahead for Russia - microbiologist
In Russia, the dynamics of human infection with COVID-19 coronavirus infection is no different from other countries, but the process occurs with a delay of several weeks.
Doctor of Biological Sciences, professor at Rutgers University (USA), head of laboratories at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Gene Biology of the Russian Academy of Sciences Konstantin Severinov stated this in an interview with Komsomolskaya Pravda, answering the question why in Russia the number of deaths from coronavirus infection is significantly less than in Italy, Spain and France.
He noted that the virus came to Russia later than to Italy.
“Therefore, we will be able to say where doctors, the state and people were better able to fight the infection, not now, but later. Consider us Italy, just a month ago. Then everything was good there too,” Severinov noted.
At the same time, he emphasized that he wants to hope for the best.
“But in this case we see how the situation is developing in all countries of the world. The daily dynamics of accumulation shows everything; there’s no getting around it. We are experiencing a very rapid increase. Now it is faster than in Italy, Germany, even than in France. It’s just not so noticeable here, since the total number of cases is still relatively small,” says the scientist.
He was also asked to answer the question whether China can be said to have coped with the coronavirus.
“As long as you believe their statistics. I don't think Chinese statistics are much better than ours. We can say that the number of registered and declared cases has not increased over the past month,” the microbiologist said.
“If you look at the graphs - how the number of cases is growing in different countries, you will see: the shape of the curve built on the basis of these figures is the same everywhere. You can see all this on the Johns Hopkins University website. And you will see that in Russia everything happens exactly the same as in other countries. Just with a delay of three weeks, a month depending on a particular country. Unfortunately, this shape of the curve, the accumulation of patients every day, shows that we are no different from other countries. It’s just that the process started later for us,” says Severinov.
