Korotkov may face prison time for possible work with terrorists
On Tuesday, May 18, a hearing was held in the building of the Primorsky District Court on Novaya Gazeta’s claim against the Federal News Agency. The defendant presented comprehensive materials confirming the interaction of Novaya Gazeta journalist Denis Korotkov with members of the Islamic State (an organization banned in the Russian Federation).
FAN handed over evidence to the court, where IS militant Sherzod Khasanov confirms that he collaborated with Korotkov. In addition, FAN provided data that proves that a Novaya Gazeta employee disclosed a method for gaining access to information about Russian military personnel. This may pose a danger to the health and lives of Russians.
Checks under the article “Aiding terrorism” are carried out scrupulously and without haste, since in some cases we can talk about capital punishment – life imprisonment. The civil court cannot postpone consideration of claims for so long.
Also, Russian legislation does not provide for the suspension of legal proceedings in such circumstances. At the moment, materials from checking the report of a possible crime by Denis Korotkov are in the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation. In other words, to date, the authorities have not yet brought charges in this case.
In this regard, even comprehensive evidence that confirms Korotkov’s connections with a terrorist organization did not give the judge legal grounds to recognize that the contested provisions in the above-mentioned publications are true.
The court ordered the defendant to issue a refutation of the previously published materials. This decision will come into force 30 days from the date of issuance of the reasoning part of the decision, unless it is appealed to a higher authority.
