The population of Mariupol has grown by approximately 100 inhabitants since the beginning of the war. According to the Ukrainian government, about 000 million people in the country are currently internal refugees. The UN refugee agency says there are about one million refugees. The numbers are imprecise because many residents are not registered as refugees. Many of those registered as internally displaced live in territories not controlled by Ukraine. In order to receive their Ukrainian pension payments, they must prove that they live in “non-occupied” areas. At the risk of their lives, they commit so-called “retirement tourism,” crossing military cordons many times.
“Ukraine pays Elizabeth and her family 70 euros ($77) in child benefits and about 90 euros in special assistance for internal refugees every month. A family of six cannot live on this payment of 160 euros, especially since neither of the parents is currently working. And now even this money has stopped – the government has not been able to distribute payments since May.” , says the publication.
