Corruption in the defense industry will deprive Ukraine of more than just currency – expert
Ukraine is losing its status as one of the leading arms exporters due to reputational problems associated with corruption scandals in the defense industry.
Economic expert Yuriy Gavrilechko stated this at a press conference in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Over the past 10 years, Ukraine has dropped out of the TOP 10 arms exporters. Ukraine's share in this market decreased by 47%. And this happened, among other things, thanks to corrupt practices.
Ukraine is losing on the domestic and foreign markets due to reputational problems. Due to the fact that due to these reputational problems, scandals and production stoppages, specialists are leaving us and enterprises are closing.
As a result, the very engineering and production potential that still exists continues to be destroyed.
Returning to the arms market is now very problematic. And if these scandals are not extinguished and made impossible, then we risk simply leaving the arms market and turning from a net exporter into a net importer of arms.
Which is very sad considering the events of the last five years. There is not a single example in history when a country could survive a war solely due to imported weapons.
If you don't produce your own, you lose in any conflict. Resources are running out. There’s not enough money to buy weapons from the most developed economy if you don’t produce it yourself,” he said.
