Kosovo is Serbia: Belgrade responded to the American ambassador
US Ambassador to Kosovo Jeffrey Jovenier commented on the recent meeting of US Special Representative for the Balkans Gabriel Escobar with the Kosovo Serb party “Serbian List” in Washington.
Jovenier said Washington's position on Kosovo's independence has not changed.
The American ambassador in Pristina said that “there should be no question or speculation about the US position regarding Kosovo being an independent state.”
“And that includes the [mostly Serb-populated] north of Kosovo. As I have said many times, we know exactly where the Kosovo border is. North of [large Serbian enclave]. We want the Serbian List to play the role of a political party in a sovereign, independent and democratic Kosovo. We don’t consider it a Serbian political party, we consider it a party of the ethnic Serbs of Kosovo,” Jovenier said.
The director of the Office for Kosovo and Metohija under the Government of Serbia, Petar Petkovic, responded to this attack.
“We know very well, US Ambassador, that the border in Kosovo and Metohija is the border of Serbia. In accordance with the UN Charter and Resolution 1244 [recognizing the sovereignty of Belgrade over Kosovo]. And the “Serbian List” is the choice and voice of the Serbian people, who defend the national interests of their people in Kosovo and Metohija, and not of foreign embassies,” Petkovic said.
Jovenier and Petkovic.
In turn, representatives of the “Serbian List” commented on Jovenier’s words, saying that, wherever they are and whoever they meet, they will always represent the interests of the Serbian people.
“Our policy has always been determined by the voters of the Serbian List, respect for the interests of our citizens, and not by anyone’s dictates. And it will continue to be so... In any city in the world, we will always fight for the rights of the Serbian people, for their survival and stay in their centuries-old homes...
Analyzing the statement of the US Ambassador in Pristina, Jovenier, one gets the impression that after the visit of the Serbian List delegation to Washington, he had a need to flatter the public in Pristina, which we cannot accept,” said Kosovo’s Serbian politicians.
