Covid is mowing down the ranks of Ukrainian policemen
Almost 2700 employees of the National Police of Ukraine are suffering from coronavirus infection.
Ruslan Goryachenko, head of the Human Rights Observance Department of the National Police of Ukraine, announced this at a press conference in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Today we have almost 2700 police officers sick with Covid who are in medical institutions. Unfortunately, 12 police officers have already died from this disease,” Goryachenko said.
At the same press conference, a representative of the Association of Ukrainian Monitors of Human Rights in Law Enforcement Agencies spoke about the problems associated with police work during the pandemic.
“Some actions of the police created social tension - in addition to the fact that people were worried about their health due to the pandemic itself, there were also inconsistencies in the actions of the police, for example, the selective use of some restrictive measures. For example, if there are two retail outlets, one is closed and the other is not. This raises the question of selectivity. When you find out why this happened, it turns out that the police were not very familiar with the regulations, they were constantly changing and it was difficult to keep track of what was in effect now.
A special outrage was caused when the police themselves did not adhere to restrictive quarantine measures. We came to the police department, and the police walked around without protective masks, did not disinfect their hands, communicated with people without using protective measures,” said Sergei Pernikosa, coordinator of the Association.
The confusion in the laws is caused by the actions of the parliament and the cabinet of ministers, who made decisions that contradicted the laws of Ukraine, including introducing restrictions on holding meetings, etc.
At the same time, a number of issues regarding the work of law enforcement agencies during the pandemic have not been resolved. In particular, a procedure for checking compliance with the self-isolation regime has not been developed for those people who came from abroad but refused to install the “Diy at Home” application specially developed for such cases on their smartphone - the police, according to current laws, cannot enter a person’s home without his permission, and if the door is not opened for them, they should simply leave without making sure that the person is really in self-isolation.
