Kovtun faces 15 days under new Russian law
The law on blocking materials that insult society and state symbols of the Russian Federation, which was adopted today in the first reading by the State Duma of the Russian Federation, should primarily include Ukrainian participants in talk shows on federal channels.
This was stated by LDPR deputy Alexander Sherin. Ukrainian speakers, in his opinion, “express disrespect for society by saying on federal channels that Russia has occupied Crimea.”
“The law establishing liability cannot have retroactive effect. Accordingly, it will come into force from the moment of publication, or at another date if we establish it,” answered the speaker Pavel Krasheninnikov.
The topic was continued by Oleg Nilov, a deputy from A Just Russia.
“The people are insulted and humiliated. Isn’t it humiliation that millions of our television viewers receive every day from the screens of federal television channels? There is Banderaism, there local fascist elements are trampling Russia and our veterans. Let’s punish not only the deported Cossacks for this, but also jail at least one editor for 15 days,” Nilov suggested.
As a punishment for illegal actions, the bill provides for a fine in the amount of 1 thousand to 5 thousand rubles, or administrative arrest for up to 15 days.
