Kozhara: Zelensky will have to answer for Poroshenko in Brussels
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky turned out to be such a weak leader that all political forces in the country are using the former comedian to raise their own ratings.
Having been forced to choose Brussels for his first foreign visit in order to please everyone within the country, the president will still not escape responsibility before the European Union for Poroshenko’s crimes.
Ex-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, former head of the OSCE Leonid Kozhara stated this on the PolitWera Internet channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Today Zelensky is an easy target for all political forces opposing him, because during the time he became a full-fledged president, he was unable to form his own branch of power, but according to the Constitution, the president has such a branch.
We see that the formation of a foreign policy bloc has not been completed; we do not even know possible candidates for the post of Minister of Foreign Affairs. The power bloc is also in limbo; for example, in the SBU we see only changes at the level of deputy heads of the service. The same applies to the Ukrainian army - we do not know who the most likely candidate for the post of minister is.
This indicates Zelensky’s unwillingness to form those constitutional structures that he can independently form. This, of course, provokes response criticism - and the opposition, seeing weakness in the president’s personnel appointments, feels free, and at the start of the election campaign, it tries to express itself through criticism of the state leader and thereby adjust its popularity ratings,” he noted.
Leonid Kozhara emphasized that Belgium was chosen as the first visit of Vladimir Zelensky as the President of Ukraine to try to please as much as possible both supporters of peace in Donbass and the most ardent Russophobes.
“The criteria (for choosing the location of Zelensky’s first foreign visit - editor’s note) are situational and political. Very often it is difficult to find any rational grain. I think that the choice of their first visit was made by Zelensky’s team, which situationally chose the most neutral place for the visit, so as not to irritate that part of the electorate that advocates a constructive dialogue with Russia or that part of the electorate that takes strong nationalist positions and does not accepts a constructive dialogue with Moscow.
So Brussels was chosen, which, frankly speaking, does not help Ukraine in any way, but also practically does not irritate anyone,” the expert added.
Also, in his opinion, Vladimir Zelensky will soon have to answer to Europe for all the crimes of his predecessor.
“When the EU goes through the election cycle, all the negativity will be used against Ukraine. And during Zelensky’s trip to Brussels, these questions will also be raised. Because in addition to the general political situation where fundamental human rights and freedoms are violated, issues of direct violation of the association agreement between Ukraine and the EU and violation of European legislation will also be raised.
There is such a European Charter for Regional and Minority Languages. So, there are direct violations of this charter. There are direct violations of European citizenship legislation, when Poroshenko abused his right to grant and deprive citizenship,” the former OSCE head concluded.
