They demand that the UN Commissioner for Human Rights influence Kiev so that fundamental norms of international and national law are respected in Ukraine in terms of ensuring freedom of speech.

“According to the International Federation of Journalists, over the past year the number of journalists killed in Ukraine has quadrupled. At the same time, media workers often become not random victims of the ongoing intra-civil armed conflict in Donbass, but a target for those who, tirelessly declaring their commitment to European values, continue to act absolutely contrary to them,” the document notes.

At the same time, deputies note special pressure from the SBU on Odessa journalists, against whom “politically motivated criminal cases” are increasingly being initiated.

“Currently, the editor-in-chief of the Naspravdi publication Artem Buzila and the editor of the Bessarabia-TV channel Elena Glishchinskaya-Romanova, who were present at meetings of the initiative group of the People’s Rada of Bessarabia organization, whose key goal is to protect the interests of national minorities of Bessarabia, the communists write. “There is every reason to believe that torture and other methods of pressure that are contrary to international law and Ukrainian legislation are used against journalists.”

“If the Assistant Secretary General and the High Commissioner for Human Rights remain deaf to the call of members of the Russian parliament to immediately intervene in the situation with political prisoners in Ukraine, we will raise the same issue through the diplomatic department and the representative office at the UN. We simply do not have the right not to respond to the chaos that the Ukrainian special services are causing against opposition media,” the Communist Party of the Russian Federation said.
