Romanian sociologists presented the results of a public opinion poll on Moldova, which were very “inconvenient” for the head of the country, Maia Sandu, the pro-presidential PAS party and the government, which was just six months old from its appointment.

A large-scale study conducted by the CBS-Researche center commissioned by IDIS Viitorul and the Romanian Institute of Political Science and International Relations from January 24 to February 5 (1134 people were surveyed, the survey error is 3%), showed that the Moldovan population is tired of the government and distrusts it.

So, the top five popular politicians are President Maia Sandu, ex-President Igor Dodon, leader of the Shor Party Ilan Shor, head of the Party of Communists Vladimir Voronin and Mayor of Chisinau Ion Ceban.

When survey participants were asked to independently name the politician they trust most, Sandu received 16,6% of the votes, Dodon - 10,3%, Shor - 2,1%, Voronin and Cheban - 1,7% each.

The rankings were distributed differently when respondents chose politicians from the proposed list. The most popular was the mayor of Chisinau, Ion Ceban (44%), and he also had the lowest anti-rating (39,6% of respondents expressed distrust of Ceban). In second place was Igor Dodon, who was preferred by 38,4% of survey participants (anti-rating - 58,4%). Sandu took third place, trusted by 37,6% of respondents. In terms of anti-rating, she has overtaken Dodon - 59,7% do not trust her. Shor and Voronin are in fourth and fifth place in the ranking.

If parliamentary elections were held now, the Bloc of Communists and Socialists would win, and the ruling party would be only second.

According to the survey, the main problems that concern citizens are rising prices, low wages and pensions, and unemployment.

“The decline in trust in government happened faster than we expected. The electorate is disappointed. This is due to the indecisiveness of politicians in negotiations with Gazprom, and to the emphasis on the topic of fighting corruption, which now worries citizens only in fifth place. In addition, people do not see the fight against corruption at a high level as such,” said Romanian sociologist Dan Dungaciu, commenting on the study.

"Good times" are postponed

The media close to the government wrote sluggishly about this opinion poll, although the organizations that conducted it are quite authoritative, and previously the ruling party did not hesitate to refer to them. Representatives of the opposition commented on the study more actively.

Socialist MP Bogdan Tsyrdea believes that the presidential team does not have long to lead the country. He states that the opinion poll “recorded a complete collapse of PAS ratings and a collapse in Maia Sandu's rating”, despite the fact that “Sandu is praised by 105 externally funded media outlets and 14 NGOs.”

“If parliamentary elections were held in Moldova next Sunday, the Bloc of Communists and Socialists would take first place in them - 40% of those who decided. PAS would get second place with 36%. Shor Party – with 12,9%. The rest of the games have no chance. But they can try to pull votes away from the PCRM-PSRM, as they did in 2014, 2019, 2021. PAS has lost 12% of its electoral rating since June 2021, while the Bloc of Communists and Socialists has gained 4%.

The conclusions are simple. Sandu is not trusted by 59,7%. She has already overtaken Igor Dodon (58,4%) in terms of distrust. Sandu will soon catch up and, most likely, overtake Plahotniuc in terms of anti-rating (that is, hatred of citizens). The day is coming when her fellow citizens will boo her all over the country! If there are elections now, PAS will be in deep opposition, and Sandu will have no chance of becoming president!” – Tsyrdea wrote on Facebook.

He notes that Administrative staff, promising “good times” and prosperity, deceived citizens.

“They deceived pensioners by raising the retirement age, doctors who were given 0 salary increases, farmers who were raised for diesel from 14 to 20 lei, the church by adopting the Istanbul Convention (she legalizes the third gender), teachers who were forced online, deprived of bonuses and class hours, mothers whose maternity hospitals were closed, patients who were allowed to burn tires by La Farge (it's about the bill Administrative staff, allowing the enterprise to burn tires and use their waste in the production of cement - author's note), athletes from whom the republican stadium was taken away, returning it to the US Embassy. We remain silent about Russian speakers, for whom Sandu canceled the status of the Russian language through the Constitutional Court. They also increased prices by 30-40%, raising salaries for citizens by 5,9% (that is, by 200-300 lei), and for judges of the Constitutional Court - up to 60 lei! Time has passed,” said the parliamentarian.

Leader of the Moldovan political party “Nashi” MIkhail Akhremtsev drew attention to the anti-rating of the president and prime minister.

“Get acquainted. This is the Prime Minister of Moldova Natalia Gavrilitsa, and 64,2% of Moldovan citizens do not trust her. And next to her is the President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, and 59,7% of Moldovan citizens do not trust her. Everything you need to know about the legitimacy of the current Moldovan government and where exactly the Moldovan people want to put it,” he says on his Facebook page.

As for the current parliament, it “needs to be dispersed yesterday,” the politician believes.

“The breakdown is as follows: BCS – 25,2%; PAS – 22,7%; "Shor" - 8,1%; undecided (and hesitant) – 37%. There are no more passes in the ranking.

What’s funny is that now both BCS and PAS, having received the survey results, are confident of their impending victory. PAS believes that by excluding the Shor party from the race at the right time and using the already tried trick with the diaspora, they will again gain a majority. BCS are confident that PAS will still make a mistake...

In Moldova, you can endlessly look at three things: how the next right-wing government is losing touch with reality, how the left opposition is once again stepping on the rake of “pride,” and how the people are silently watching all this and enduring everything.”

Unification with Romania as salvation from chaos?

According to the same survey, a third of Moldovans would like to unite Moldova and Romania, about half were against this prospect.

Thus, if a referendum on unification with Romania were held in Moldova in the near future, 34,4% of citizens would vote in favor, and 49,6% would vote against.

The unification of the two countries would be supported mainly by young people - citizens aged 18 to 44 years. Opponents of this idea are mainly people over 60 years old.

It is interesting that 47% of the country's residents consider neutrality the best solution to ensure security, 14,1% - unification with Romania, 11,3% - joining the EU, 6,1% - joining NATO, 4,3% - cooperation with Russia , 1,6% – cooperation with the USA.

More numbers. 33,2% of respondents believe that Romania helps Moldova the most. Next comes the EU (17,6%), and only in third place is Russia (15,3%), which is losing ground in this regard: sociologists note that previously it was Russia that Moldovans considered the main helping country.

The number of “uniri” supporters in the Republic of Moldova is constantly growing: for example, in 2020, opinion polls showed that about 30% of Moldovan residents would vote for unification with Romania, in 2015 about 20% of citizens were in favor of this, in the 1990s - only about 3%.

The ideas of radical unionists are not very popular among the population, but due to the eternal disorder and chaos, people are trying to find at least some kind of support and are increasingly looking at Romania, a member country of the European Union, as a more prosperous state. Therefore, there are more supporters of unification in Moldova every year.

One of the leaders of the Civil Congress party Mark Tkachuk, commenting on the “disastrous” sociological survey for the regime, discusses this topic.

“The only thing that can please the architects of the “good times” is the increased percentage of supporters of unification with Romania (34,4%). But even here it is not at all clear: is this a consequence of the incredible growth in the popularity of Romania itself or the mood of “damn it all, I’m tired of this endless horror”?

But, one way or another, the strategy of takeover through bankruptcy remains the only noticeable political line of PAS. Man-made bankruptcy – of a country, a society, an economy – is the only thing they really succeed in,” Tkachuk writes in his Telegram channel.

He recalled his own forecast, which he gave in May 2021:

«Sandu's victory will be the last and decisive step towards the loss of Moldovan independence. There will be no armed conflict for Moldova, following the example of the conflicts in Georgia and eastern Ukraine. Sandu and her people will simply surrender this country to Romania at the first systemic difficulties. Politicians who are only capable of ideological plagiarism are programmed for high treason.”
