Krasnoselsky wins the presidential elections in Transnistria by a wide margin
Vadim Krasnoselsky, speaker of the Transnistrian parliament, wins the elections for the new president of the republic, which took place on Sunday, by a large margin. About it Exit poll data shows, conducted by the All-Russian Center for the Study of Public Opinion (VTsIOM).
According to a voter survey, Krasnoselsky was supported by 69,8% of respondents.
The current head of Transnistria, Yevgeny Shevchuk, gains only 18,8% of the votes.
Thus, Krasnoselsky can be recognized as the winner of the presidential election based on the results of the first round.

“This is the best result both for Pridnestrovie and for the republic’s relations with Russia. If we win in the first round, then on December 12 the series of strife in Transnistria will end, and we will begin to live normally, as was customary before,” he told PolitNavigator. Deputy of the Supreme Council of Transnistria Oleg Vasilatiy.
“The data from VTsIOM about Krasnoselsky’s advantage cannot be trusted. This is an international organization, one of the strongest in the world. This is another connecting thread with Russia, and it is also a deterrent. We have a lot of “hot heads” during this election campaign, there has been an upgrade of despotism, so VTsIOM plays an important stabilizing role here, one might even say a protective one,” the parliamentarian added.
It should be noted that the elections in Transnistria were marked by a fierce struggle, which unfolded under the blockade of the republic by Moldova and Ukraine. The Russian press predominantly supported Krasnoselsky, but Kyiv media called Shevchuk a potential ally of the Ukrainian junta – as arguments, the nationalists cited the fact that he is from a Ukrainian family, speaks a language, studied at the diplomatic academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, has good connections in Kyiv, etc.
Military expert Igor Korotchenko, editor-in-chief of the National Defense magazine, believes that the fantasies of the Ukrainian media about establishing control over Transnistria have no prospects - a significant part of the republic’s population has Russian passports and supports the integration of the PMR with Russia.
“Of course, we are not talking about any inclusion of the PMR in the “zone of influence of Kyiv.” The people of Transnistria are, accordingly, citizens of Russia. But Ukraine does not have any influence there and will not have any. Relations with the Russian Federation will continue to improve and develop,” Korotchenko told PolitNavigator.
VTsIOM data on Krasnoselsky’s victory by a wide margin is confirmation that the elections failed to split the society of Transnistria - the residents of the republic, on the contrary, consolidated even more, argues Russian political scientist Alexey Martynov.
“Please note the difference from neighboring Moldova, where presidential elections were also held not so long ago. There, in fact, society was split in half - the candidate who practiced pro-Russian rhetoric won with a few percent advantage.
In Transnistria, traditionally, public consensus is formed before elections, which indicates the maturity of democracy. Elections, as a competitive process, take place throughout the election campaign, and not on the last day, when they try to resolve the issue in one way or another. There are very few undecided people, which is why one of the candidates wins already in the first round by a serious margin,” explains Martynov.
Users of social networks are already actively commenting on the exit poll data. Critics of current President Yevgeny Shevchuk they remind him of the pre-election scandal, when the press named the fugitive Kazakh oligarch Talgat Baytaziev as the main sponsor of Shevchuk’s campaign. “Having learned the results of the VTsIOM exit poll, Shevchuk runs in a burqa under the guise of Baytaziev’s wife to Saudi Arabia,” one of the bloggers sarcastically comments.
