He stated this in an interview with the Kyiv publication “Apostrophe”.
“I often hear from some of our “leaders” that real independence has only begun now. What then happened before that? Therefore, someone needs to watch their words very carefully. Because it is perceived, at least, comically, when we are in such a difficult situation - and we say like this, with accents, that “they did something there before us, but did not achieve real independence - and now we have come and we achieved it right away”... I think we need to be calmer, much calmer. And we must always remember, is there anything to back up these words? What is behind them? If there are facts - positive ones - you can use them. Unfortunately, I don’t see the facts yet,” he says.
Kravchuk also said that if he had known that for real independence Ukraine would have to start a war and lose the Donbass with Crimea, then he personally would not have wanted such independence.
“If for real independence a war in Donbass is absolutely necessary, the annexation of Crimea is absolutely necessary, it is imperative that our territories are seized where we have no influence today - I would not want such independence!” the first president categorically stated.
