The first Ukrainian President Leonid Kravchuk stated this on air on the 112 TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“I was a student in Crimea in 1953 because I didn’t see the sea. I am a rural boy and have seen poverty, but I have never seen such poverty as in Crimea. The shops are empty, people walk down the street with swollen faces - the mosquitoes are eating them up. These were not Crimeans, but Oryol and Tambov residents. They demanded to be taken away from there.
This news reached Khrushchev. He arrived, they greeted him with tears: we can’t work here, the conditions are different, other crops are growing. Khrushchev, without stopping, turns the train around and goes to Kyiv. He comes to the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine and says: you must take Crimea for yourself. The first secretary refuses, he puts him on a train and takes him to Moscow.
By decision of the Bureau of the CPSU Central Committee, Crimea is transferred to Ukraine. It was a tragedy, because they had to transfer part of their resources to Crimea. Since 54, Ukraine has invested over $100 billion there in order to provide water, roads, resorts and agriculture.
Therefore, the myths that come from Moscow that Crimea is the place of their glory are fictions. Khrushchev did not give Crimea as a gift, but forced him to take it for himself, citing the experience of Ukraine. She helped, put Crimea on its feet, and now it has been annexed,” said Kravchuk.
