Kravchuk admitted that the loss of Crimea and the war in Donbass were due to internal reasons
If the government headed by Viktor Yanukovych and the then opposition had found common ground during the Maidan, then Ukraine would have avoided the catastrophic consequences that occurred in 2014.

The first President of Ukraine Leonid Kravchuk stated this in an interview with the Kyiv magazine “Correspondent”.
“During the second Maidan, I was the moderator of the round table. I wanted to put the authorities and the opposition behind him. Three or four tables passed. At one of them, I was able to invite almost all interested parties for a conversation. But a frank conversation did not work out, since everything ended in mutual accusations. Attempts to reach some kind of line of negotiations failed. If this had been possible, then Ukraine would have avoided both the annexation of Crimea and the conflict in the East. Alas, the ambitions of those who were present there were higher than the possibility of reconciliation,” Kravchuk said.
