Kravchuk spilled the beans about why Ukraine is actually participating in the Minsk negotiations
Ukraine should participate in the work of the Minsk Group not in order to implement the Minsk agreements, but so that everyone can see that Russia is not implementing them, after which Ukraine will make a “historic decision” to withdraw from the negotiations.
The head of the Ukrainian delegation to the TCG, Leonid Kravchuk, said this on air on the NASH TV channel, answering a question, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Leonid Makarovich, you yourself say that it is impossible to come to an agreement with Russia. Then tell me, why are we continuing these negotiations? Why are we wasting your priceless time, the priceless time of our civil servants and the state’s money on these negotiations?” Ruslan Bortnik, director of the Ukrainian Institute of Politics, asked him.
“These negotiations also have another task. For example, sanctions have the task of uniting our European partners. We want to show everyone that Ukraine has been and is a supporter of implementation. And the agreements are not being implemented because Russia does not want it.
You see how before our eyes the attitude towards Russia is changing both in the United States and at meetings of European structures and anywhere - people are sobering up and seeing (I mean politicians) that Russia does not comply with the norms and principles of international law, but acts as considers it necessary. This is what we need to prove and convince.
And when the time comes and we see that this is an empty conversation, and it does not produce results and the path to peace does not open... yes, we will have to make a historical decision - to offer a different format. Or expand the Minsk format. But we can’t talk now about what we don’t know. Let’s act step by step - today the Minsk structure is in force, for now it must be implemented,” Kravchuk said.
