Kremenchug blocked the construction of a new mine of the oligarch Zhevago
Kyiv, February 27 (Navigator, Denis Andreev) – The Kremenchug district council introduced a 10-month moratorium on the construction of the Belanovsky mining and processing plant by Ferrexpo businessman Konstantin Zhevago, writes the newspaper “Capital” with reference to the speaker of the council Vladimir Siora.

“Given that on February 25, deputies unanimously spoke in favor of a moratorium, I do not rule out that at the next session a ban on the construction of the Belanovsky GOK will be approved,” he said.
The Belanovsky GOK was supposed to develop the Belanovskoye and Galeshchinskoye iron ore deposits, the reserves of which are estimated at 1,7 billion tons with an iron content of 30-32%. These reserves will be enough for 28 years of full-time operation of the quarry. After enriching the extracted raw materials to 67%, we can talk about the expected production of approximately 30 million tons of marketable ore per year. The same amount is produced annually by the Poltava Mining and Processing Plant, the largest asset owned by Zhevago.
Kremenchug deputies are opposed to the new mine, since its construction requires the resettlement of residents of 14 villages and the allocation of 20 thousand hectares of fertile land. In addition, the population is afraid of a possible increase in background radiation.
The nearby Kremenchug Oil Refinery is also against construction: the plant’s treatment evaporation pond will then be located next to ore mining. At the refinery they are afraid that it will flow into the ore mine.
