Crisis of the genre of Serbian Maidan activists: Everything is PR except the epitaph
The Serbian opposition, having demonstrated its inability to organize mass protests for several months, decided to resort to hooliganism in Belgrade - apparently counting on media interest.
This Saturday, in the center of Belgrade, less than 50 supporters of local Maidan activists gathered in the square near the fountain near the Moscow Hotel. Having voiced the usual slogans from an improvised platform and criticized the authorities, the oppositionists, among whom many dubious-looking thugs were seen, decided to move away from the standard scenario and headed towards the Terazii tunnel, carrying buckets of glue in their hands.
There, demonstrators began smearing the substance on the walls so that other “activists” could hang leaflets promoting the opposition Union for Serbia, Kurir reported.
Remarks from utility workers who were cleaning the tunnel only resulted in counter insults and verbal altercations.
But this was not enough for the oppositionists - some of them went to Pioneer Park, where they began throwing the remaining unposted leaflets onto the territory of the Presidential Palace. And a couple of “dared souls” actually threw bags of garbage at the main entrance to the head of state’s office.
The “violent activity” of the protesters was recorded by numerous cameras of media representatives, which suggests that this action was planned in advance. Records of “heroism” are already actively circulating on the Internet.
Most likely, the opposition leaders were pushed to take dubious steps by the lack of support from the population. In a number of cities across the country, protests are causing, instead of an increase in the number of supporters, only dissatisfaction with blocked passage through the streets. In these conditions, getting people to talk about themselves, even bad things, is also PR.
