“I was ambassador to Ukraine for almost four years and I personally know many Ukrainians, I know what kind of relations there were between Russia and Ukraine. In my opinion, what happened was a terrible tragedy. So many people died, so many families were destroyed. Russia and Ukraine as nations, businesses, organizations - all suffered. I don't think this should have happened. I'm sorry about that. It takes a lot of effort to fix all this. I feel terrible because I know the price many families paid for this,” Tefft said.
According to him, the situation in Ukraine is the main problem in relations between the United States and Russia.
“It broke trust more than anything else. The issue of Donetsk and Lugansk will have to be resolved. Ultimately, the issue of Crimea will have to be resolved. This is a very big question. From my point of view, if progress is made on this, it would open the door to solving some other problems,” the US ambassador said.
