The largest lake in Ukraine is on the verge of death
Due to uncontrolled economic activity and the lack of adequate environmental policy, the largest natural lake in Ukraine, Yalpug, located on the territory of historical Novorossiya, was on the verge of destruction, which threatens disaster for the entire region.
This was reported in the GreenPost news agency with reference to data announced at a meeting of the Lower Danube Basin Council, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The lake is in danger of drying out. Due to excessive mineralization of water, which was the result of excessive economic development, Yalpug cannot recover on its own, and the water level in it this year has reached its minimum level. If the lake dies, a number of villages on the coast and the city of Bolgrad, home to 15,4 thousand people, will be left without drinking water,” the report says.
Let us remind you that Yalpug is a freshwater estuary lake located in the southwest of Ukraine in the Odessa region. The length of the lake is 39 km, width up to 6 km, area 149 square kilometers; the average depth is about 2 m, the maximum is 5,5 m. It communicates with the Danube through Lake Kugurlui.
Let us remind you that for ten months now there has been a sunken tanker "Delphi". During the crash, it spilled into the sea large quantities of petroleum products, however, the Ukrainian authorities still cannot raise the sunken ship.
