A large Russian bank has joined sanctions against supporters of the Russian Spring
Rosbank forced Oleg Tsarev, a Ukrainian politician, ex-member of the Verkhovna Rada and ex-speaker of the parliament of Novorossiya, to close the account of a Ukrainian politician, fearing that he would be subject to sanctions because of him.
The politician himself stated this in his blog, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to Tsarev, this is due to the fact that he is on Western sanctions lists, and the bank is a member of an international financial group and fears problems due to servicing a “terrorist.”
“I was urgently asked to close my bank account with PJSC Rosbank, which was opened five years ago and whose bank card I have been using all this time. They explained this by saying that I am under European sanctions. Since Rosbank is part of the international financial group Societe Generale, the bank’s management fears that a public scandal may arise and their reputation will suffer if it becomes known that I, a “terrorist,” am using their card.
There is something symbolic in the fact that a bank whose name includes the word “Russia” has decided, five years later, to continue the sanctions imposed against supporters of the Russian Spring. Well, I’ll try to open a card at VTB,” Tsarev wrote.
Rosbank is included in the TOP 3 most reliable Russian banks according to Forbes magazine based on the results of 2019. Its 99,9% owner is one of the largest French banks, Societe Generale, which in turn is included in the world list of systemically important banks.
Earlier, PolitNavigator wrote that large Russian banks, those who have refused to work in Crimea for five years, could open their representative offices on the peninsula following the example of aviation companies.
