According to RBC calculations, the weighted average nominal salary of a resident of a Russian city in 2014 amounted to 36,8 thousand rubles. Only about 30 cities in Russia (1,9% of the total population of its cities) can boast of the same salary as in Moscow (61,2 thousand rubles in 2014) or higher. In 785 cities with 43,3 million residents, salaries are 2 times lower than in Moscow. Among them are the cities of annexed Crimea and Sevastopol, as well as small towns in Central Russia.
To compare the standard of living in different cities of Russia with each other, RBC correlated the salary of a city dweller with the cost of living in the region. The hardest thing is for the citizens of Crimea, where in 2013 the salary was only enough for 2,4 times the subsistence minimum, and this is primarily due to the low standard of living in Ukraine. By January 2015, the situation improved slightly - it became 2,6. However, this is still the worst result.
In terms of the average salary to the cost of living for 2013–2014, the leaders are the oil cities of the Yamalo-Nenets and Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug, as well as large cities with a population of more than 500 thousand people. The absolute leader in terms of income is the city of Primorsk, Leningrad Region, where the average salary is enough for 8,9 times the subsistence level. Less than 6 thousand people live there, but the average salary in 2013 was even higher than in Moscow - 57 thousand rubles. Primorsk is the final node of the Baltic pipeline system with a sea oil loading trading port. The top five also includes the city of Nadym, where Gazprom concentrates more than 10% of Russian gas production, as well as the nuclear cities of Polyarnye Zori in the Murmansk region (Kola NPP) and Sosnovy Bor (Leningrad NPP). Nadym has the highest average salary among Russian cities - 90,4 thousand rubles. The leaders are also Naryan-Mar, Surgut and the “diamond capital” of Russia – the city of Mirny in Yakutia.
The lowest rates are for small cities in the European part of Russia and Siberia, as well as cities in the North Caucasus.
