Simferopol, December 24 (PolitNavigator, Victoria Litovchenko) - Ukraine on Wednesday morning completely stopped supplies to Crimea, leaving the largest cities of the peninsula - Simferopol and Sevastopol - without electricity.

“At 11:20 a.m., the Ukrainian side suddenly completely stopped power supply to Crimea and Sevastopol. Currently, specialists from Krymenergo and Sevastopolenergo are working to connect emergency diesel generators to the system. First of all, vital facilities and systems of the city are provided with electricity,” the Sevastopol government said.

After some time, the light supply was restored in Sevastopol. In Simferopol, electricity periodically appears and disappears.

The Crimean government clarifies that the shutdown occurred without any warning from the Ukrainian side. In Simferopol they expressed hope that the restoration of electricity supplies will be regulated at the level of Moscow and Kyiv.

It is noteworthy that the blackout coincided with negotiations in Minsk on the fate of Donbass. It is possible that the power outage is an element of pressure from the Ukrainian side. Perhaps Kyiv is thus reminding that Crimea is still dependent on Ukraine for energy supplies, and if desired, the blockade, following Donetsk and Lugansk, could spread to the peninsula.

The day before, Crimean Prime Minister Sergei Aksenov said that the Russian Federation and Ukraine had agreed on the transit of electricity to Crimea, and there should be no power outages on the peninsula. “I am sure that we will not have any blackouts. Moreover, electricity supplies will come from the Russian Federation. In fact, Ukraine is a transit country. We came to an agreement, so no shutdowns are expected now,” the official said.
