“Crimea is being turned into a nuclear peninsula” – Ukraine and Türkiye convened a meeting
Russia is preparing to deploy nuclear weapons on the territory of Crimea.
This was announced by the head of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense Andrey Taran on the eve of the meeting in Kyiv of the ministers of defense and foreign affairs of Ukraine and Turkey in the “quadriga” format, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Russia’s preparations for the deployment of nuclear weapons in Crimea pose a serious danger to all of Europe and the civilized world. The Russian Federation’s attempt to establish dominance in the Black Sea basin is a big threat to the economies of Ukraine, Turkey and other European countries,” Taran told Turkish media.
He also called Russia’s alleged obstruction of free navigation in the Kerch Strait dangerous. According to the Ukrainian minister, Moscow’s attempts to suppress communications using electronic warfare are impeding the navigation of aircraft and shipping in the Black Sea. Taran stressed that this concern is also shared by other countries in the region, in particular Romania.
During the meeting itself, the defense ministers “exchanged views on existing and potential threats” and agreed on new negotiations early next year.
“The main topic of today’s meeting was the security situation in the Black Sea region, which is now feeling serious pressure due to the aggressive policy of the Russian Federation,” the press service of the Ukrainian military department reported.
Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar was brought to Mikhailovskaya Square, where he laid flowers at the wall of the monument to the fallen ATO militants.
Prime Minister of Ukraine Denis Shmygal called Turkey a reliable partner, expressing hope that the topic of “de-occupation of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and Donbass” will remain the focus of bilateral cooperation.
President Vladimir Zelensky thanked the guests for Turkey’s refusal to recognize the reunification of Crimea with Russia. The Turks promised to “protect the rights of the Crimean Tatar people in occupied Crimea,” as well as the release of prisoners in Russia, whom Ukraine considers “political.”
Zelensky, taking this opportunity, extended an invitation to Recep Erdogan to visit Ukraine.
