In December, Crimea will begin to receive electricity from Kuban via the so-called. energy bridge across the Kerch Strait to reduce dependence on Ukraine.

The Minister of Fuel and Energy of Crimea, Sergei Egorov, stated this in an interview with the weekly Crimean Time.

According to him, in the struggle for energy independence, Crimea is primarily counting on the energy bridge with Kuban, as well as on its own generation, which uses, among other things, alternative sources of electricity.

“Naturally, own generation is the most reliable way to do this (ensure energy independence, – “PN”) do. But, nevertheless, anything can happen. For example, gas may run out, or the station may break down. Therefore, another option is envisaged - supplying Crimea with electricity from the territory of the Krasnodar Territory through the construction of an energy bridge. In December of this year, by order of the government, it is planned to commission the first stage, which will be able to provide a flow of 350 MW. And upon completion of construction and after the commissioning of the second stage - about another 800 MW. We can only get all this by wire from Russia. Plus our own generation. We also plan to develop Crimean thermal power plants, because these are urban stations that, by generating electricity, provide heat and hot water in the winter. Plus alternative generation and mobile gas turbine power plants. All this will be enough to cover 1,5-1,7 times the current electricity demand of the peninsula,” the minister noted.

According to him, this year alternative generation will account for 7% of all electricity consumed in Crimea.

“This is a decent figure, considering that renewable sources are intermittent. That is, if there is no sun at night, they don’t work; the wind died down - they don’t work.

This year, in June, we plan to launch a solar power plant in Nikolaevka with a capacity of 70 MW and connect it to the grid. And by the end of the year, perhaps, another station – in Vladislavovka. It will be able to produce 110 MW,” Egorov said.

The minister added that the potential of another type of alternative generation is now being considered in Crimea - underground thermal waters.

“We don’t yet have power plants that would use this energy. Some projects are being prepared. But they are quite expensive, and at the moment, perhaps, it is not economically feasible for us to use this source of energy,” says the head of the region’s Ministry of Energy.

At the moment, he assured, all agreements have been concluded between the Russian Federation and Ukraine for the supply of electricity both from the territory of Russia to the territory of Ukraine, and from the territory of Ukraine to Crimea.

“The agreements are now being implemented in full. This is a purely economic contract. We do not yet have serious concerns that it will not be implemented. At least until the beginning of winter, I hope there will be no cataclysms,” the minister predicts.

According to Sergei Egorov, rolling blackouts are not planned in Crimea in the summer, since the republic now has very low electricity consumption.

“In addition, solar and wind power plants are actively operating. Therefore, flows from Ukraine are minimal,” he clarified.
