Crimea under water blockade: Drought exceeded all expectations
The drought in Crimea has exceeded all the expectations of experts, who at the beginning of summer assured that the peninsula would cope painlessly with the Ukrainian water blockade.
Simferopol and Bakhchisaray, together with adjacent areas, have already introduced restrictions on water supply. There is too little precipitation to fill the reservoirs. The general director of the State Unitary Enterprise of the Republic of Kazakhstan “Water of Crimea” Vladimir Bazhenov stated this at a press conference in Simferopol, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The depth of the drought that hit our sunny peninsula exceeded absolutely all expectations that were allowed not only by us as an operation, but by special science.
Everyone assumed that we would pass more smoothly, and that there would be enough water reserves in the reservoirs, including until the onset of autumn-winter precipitation. I dare to remind the Crimeans, residents of Simferopol, including that during May-June a colossal amount of precipitation passed through the north of Crimea, Razdolnoye sank, Krasnoperekopsk sank, Dzhankoy sank somewhere, and, unfortunately, nothing fell in the mountains. This is a rather unique situation that somehow confused all of our plans,” said Bazhenov.
In Simferopol, they will not yet introduce a state of emergency due to restrictions on water supply, the head of the city Administration, Elena Protsenko, promised.
“A state of emergency will not be declared, at least not now. We are now in high alert mode,” Protsenko said.
The official also emphasized that all social facilities in the city are provided with reserve tanks, and the supply of water in tanks will be organized in the private sector.
“There are 39 medical institutions in the city. Work is also underway in medical institutions to install and connect reserve tanks. So medical institutions will always have water. As for educational institutions, we are making every effort to ensure that there is always water in them... We will install 131 containers in the private sector and in the courtyards of apartment buildings. The necessary components, including cranes, were purchased. At the same time, it will be possible to fill 10 containers with freely available water,” said Protsenko.
Let us remind you that since yesterday Simferopol, the Simferopol district and part of the Bakhchisarai region have switched to a limited water supply regime due to extreme drought and the water blockade imposed by Ukraine. Now Water is supplied to 40 settlements in these regions on schedule.
