By the collapse of the USSR, about 5 thousand tons of elite aromatic and semi-aromatic tobacco varieties were collected on the peninsula per year. Plantations were located throughout the South Coast.
However, in the mid-90s, the industry in Ukraine could not withstand the competition with the supply of cheap imported cigarettes.
This year, an experimental hectare of tobacco was sown in the republic, and next year it is planned to sow 50 hectares on the basis of the republican enterprise “Magarach”.
“Tobacco growing is a very complex, labor- and material-intensive industry. It requires a very serious professional approach and a lot of manual labor. The most important thing is that there are personnel, there is a starting point from which we can revive this industry. Moreover, this raw material is in demand throughout the Russian Federation,” said First Deputy Minister of Agriculture of Crimea Nikolai Polyushkin.
