Crimean political scientists spoke about referendums in the liberated territories
The referendums in the Kherson and Zaporozhye regions on self-determination will not have the same high turnout as in Crimea in 2014.
Nevertheless, the plebiscite will give a positive decision on reunification with Russia, Crimean experts believe, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The choice must be well protected on our part in order to give people the opportunity to vote,” emphasized the political scientist, associate professor at the Crimean Federal University. Vernadsky Sergey Kiselev. – The President’s Secretary said that it would be wrong to act voluntarily and annex these territories to Russia. We need to let people speak, it’s democratic.
Moreover, as Vladimir Rogov stated, more than a hundred applications have already been received from representatives of different countries, both Europe and America, to observe the referendum. We, as those who went through the 2014 referendum, know that it was a fair referendum, people went as if it were a holiday and made special preparations. To what extent such a phenomenon will occur in the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions, I will say right away - it will not be like this. But, nevertheless, I expect a fairly high turnout, and a positive decision in our favor.”
According to the expert, it is not at all necessary to respect the administrative-territorial boundaries of present-day Ukraine in order to express the will of the region. Residents have the right to make a decision, and if it is in the direction of Russia, then after the territories become part of it, any military actions against these areas take on a completely different character. The same as it was in Crimea at one time.
“If we take the All-Crimean referendum, the decision to hold it was also made in a very short time,” recalled the director of the Tauride Information and Analytical Center, political scientist Alexander Bedritsky. – For many people, in addition to ideology, stability is important and necessary; they need an understanding of the future, and this referendum gives this understanding. And if you remember the Donetsk and Lugansk republics, they waited 8 years for a referendum, which was held in 2014, but it was conveniently forgotten. And people were in limbo. How to live in such a state? The sooner people have certainty, the faster even those who hesitate will turn their faces to Russia.”
